The EMERALD STAR Award
The Emerald Star is a county rank to recognize individual goal setting and accomplishment beyond the club level. It is not part of the state star rank system (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and All Star).
WHY? To keep older members involved in a meaningful way in planning, implementing and evaluating a special activity based upon local needs.
WHO? All 4-Her’s who have completed a minimum of 1 year in a Junior/Teen Leadership Project AND be in 8th grade and older. There is no limit on the number of members who can earn this rank or number of times an individual may apply.
WHAT? The program should be something that is needed and will be used on a countywide basis.
Some examples are:
- Organize a “new” project show, field day, training day or contest.
- Improve or make a county slide show to promote 4-H or on an educational subject
- Establish a community service project, petting zoo, adopt a group home, tree planting, recycling, etc.
- Promote the buddy system with new 4-Hers and encourage new 4-H families to participate in countywide events.
- Increase visibility of 4-H i.e. 4-H community display, newspaper articles, radio show, and community event/ parade participation.
To Apply, complete the application below and return it to the Tehama County 4-H Office at 1754 Walnut Street, Red Bluff, CA 96080. You will then be listed on the following months Leader's Council agenda and you can present your project to them for approval prior to beginning your project.

Current Emerald Star Projects for 2007-08 year:
Bryan Wiggley, Aaron Lutes, Anthony King of Tehama 4-H: "Apocalypse Now!" A disaster preparedness meeting about natural disasters, using GPS and first aid knowledge. **UPDATE- The boys really had their work cut out for them gathering speakers, arrange for the location etc, but they came through and held their disaster preparedness meeting.
Dorinda Walker of Corning 4-H: "Save the Theatre" Dorinda plans to raise $1,000 in six month by collecting recyclables from the community, 4-H families and friends to help re-open Corning' Rodgers Theatre. **UPDATE- Dorinda raised $2,000 for the theatre**
Marly Adams of Corning 4-H: "Kids Helping Kids" Marly plans to go to schools and help out the younger kids and teachers. She will be encouraging other 4-H members to help her on planned volunteer days at local schools.
Katie Parks, Sierra Scholzen and Stacy Stroing of Westside 4-H: "4-H Breeding Show" These members are getting donations to develop a Breeding Animal show for 4-Her's to gain more knowledge and be able to compete with their breeding animals. Show to be held May 10th at the Tehama District Fairgrounds. Classes available for Sheep, Market Goats and Beef. **UPDATE- The show was a success with participation in all divisions, some more than others like the Meat Goat classes! Leaders Council is contemplating making this show a yearly event.
Mariah Kingwell, Olive 4-H: "Apron Challenge" Mariah has participated in the County Fashion Revue many times and wanted to help the event gain more participation so she developed an "Apron Challenge" as an add-on to this years Fashion Revue. Participants sew, purchase, or recycle an apron of any kind and present it for judging. **UPDATE- The challenge was successful with about 12 participants! Thank you Mariah for putting this together!
